Teaching, 1981-2018

On teaching, academic and applied: "My first goal as a teacher was to instill in students an engrossing passion and fascination for whatever I taught. In Music, I strove to challenge students' perceptions and understanding of music and society as well as to help them develop the musical, technical, and analytical skills necessary to perform or listen to music thoughtfully.

In all courses I taught from 1981 to 2018, whether in Music or Interdisciplinary Studies, I pushed students to think critically and independently. I expected them to develop and assert convincing, defensible arguments. As performing musicians, I challenged them to offer compelling interpretations that combined an understanding of musical style with a clear, unique musical voice.

Entering a twelve-month administrative position in 2018, I was influenced by these qualities in the way I led and engaged a faculty -- not in the sense of a teacher/student relationship, but as a leader among peers."
